Ever Prayed For A Pillow???

Well, I did...today. My husband's pillow is one of those feather pillows that has been around since creation. I have always teased him that it would "disappear" one of these days...to which he exclaims: "NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! That's MY pillow that I have had since I have been BORN!" Implying that if ANYTHING ever happened to this pillow, my head would be on a silver platter. (Figuratively speaking, of course :) ) So, I have avoided doing anything with it or to it. Yes, well, you can imagine what this pillow looks like. It is N-A-S-T-Y! I do not think it has ever been washed.

So, today I am doing laundry, including our bedding. I have been debating washing the relic of a pillow for some time now, but have not been brave enough. I don't know what possessed me to wash it today. Maybe it was the smell, maybe it was the way it looked...not sure. As I took the wretched thing to the basement I prayed over it. I asked God to preserve it...to make sure NOTHING happened to Greg's precious pillow. I was not making a mockery of God, but knew that for this pillow (and brave little me) to come out OK in the end, that God would have to make sure it would survive it's first bath.
I put it in the washer on the delicate cycle, warm/cold water with a small amount of detergent. Then...I hovered over the washer...lifting the lid now and then to make sure the pillow hadn't shredded. When I was sure it was happily swishing in the water and that there was no imminent danger, I headed back upstairs.

Several minutes later, I heard a HORRIBLE sound. It sounded like my washer was slamming up against the wall. I RAN...I mean RAAAAN down to the basement. As I rounded the corner to where the washer was, I was not sure what I would find...washer lid open, pillow and feathers flying through the air...you name it, I was picturing it. I was relieved to see everything still intact but the washer had moved to an angle due to the off-balance of the pillow during the spin cycle. WHEW! I was sooooo thankful that it was still in one piece! (The water that was coming out of the rinse cycle was GROSS! Yellow and brown in color...and when I opened the washer, I saw a little bug crawling on the pillow...you have no idea how thankful I was that this pillow was being washed!!!!)

Well, the pillow survived the washer and is currently in the dryer. I just checked on it and I am THRILLED to say that it is looking great...fluffy, clean and smelling tons better...and INTACT!! I put it in with, like, 2 dryer sheets to make sure it smells really good when it comes out. (When it came out and I emptied the lint trap, there were only a few feathers present to show for it! YAY!)

Call me crazy for praying for a pillow, but hey~it worked! And now, my hubby has a much cleaner pillow (probably cleaner than it has ever been!)

In the washer...

After the first spin-out...rinsing!

All done!!! Look how great it looks! :) (Little me is very happy!)

Hey Sally,
Have you considered sewing a new cover, or possibly purchasing one of the pillow case covers that zip shut? Then if you wash it and the old material shreds to pieces it would be nicely encased in it's new cover. Just a quick thought! Love you all!

Hi Street preachers wife! :) Actually I thought I had a mesh bag to put it in but when I tried to squeeze it in, it was too small of a bag. So, I just threw it in like it was. THANK GOD it didn't fall apart. Like I said, the thing is older than dirt so it is amazing it didn't disintigrate on me! Love you too!

What a great idea. It would give sally some good practice at sewing. She doesn't currently own a sewing machine.

haha... sorry, I couldn't help laughing at this one! :) My husband gets attached to socks and things, even when they have big holes in them... so I throw them out when they go through the wash while he's at work... he never misses them ;) For some things it's a matter of purchasing an identical replacement while they're busy... for other things I wouldn't dare - just like you and this pillow!! :) Here in Australia you can buy protective pillow cases that don't cost much that will protect the pillow... Do you have anything like that over there??

Clara,

Yes, I can buy a protective case that is zippered, but I never bothered because I didn't think we would be KEEPING the pillow. Thanks for the laugh!

Sally,
Tell the pillow owner that "mama" said he needs to buy you a sewing machine. Then when we see you in the summer we can have some sewing lessons. I have to admit this was definitely a Sal my Pal post! Miss you guys!!!
